چکیده

In this paper, we propose a rule-based formalization of eligibility criteria for clinical trials. The rule-based formalization is implemented by using the logic programming language Prolog. Compared with existing formalizations such as pattern-based and scriptbased languages, the rule-based formalization has the advantages of being declarative, expressive, reusable and easy to maintain. Our rule-based formalization is based on a general framework for eligibility criteria containing three types of knowledge: (1) trial-specific knowledge, (2) domain-specific knowledge and (3) common knowledge. This framework enables the reuse of several parts of the formalization of eligibility criteria. We have implemented the proposed rule-based formalization in SemanticCT, a semantically-enabled system for clinical trials, showing the feasibility of using our rule-based formalization of eligibility criteria for supporting patient recruitment in clinical trial systems.

Evaluating predictive modeling algorithms to assess patient eligibility for clinical trials from routine data

BACKGROUND The necessity to translate eligibility criteria from free text into decision rules that are compatible with data from the electronic health record (EHR) constitutes the main challenge when developing and deploying clinical trial recruitment support systems. Recruitment decisions based on case-based reasoning, i.e. using past cases rather than explicit rules, could dispense with the n...

CREU 2015-2016 Final Report: Analyzing interactions between treatments, side effects, and eligibility criteria in clinical trials

I) Goals and Purpose Patients with serious diseases, such as cancer, may be faced with choosing from a number of clinical trials. This is particularly true for pediatric cancer patients, where participation in clinical trials, often multiple clinical trials, is very high [5]. In addition, trials usually have eligibility criteria that prevent patients from participating based on various conditio...

Identifying Most Relevant Concepts to Describe Clinical Trial Eligibility Criteria

Since eligibility criteria of clinical trials are represented as free text, their automatic interpretation and the evaluation of patient eligibility is challenging. Our approach to the criteria processing is based on the identification of contextual patterns and semantic concepts that together define the machine-interpretable meaning. The goal of this research is to find the most relevant conce...
